Tunnel Formwork
Tunnel formwork is a kind of combined type formwork, which combines the formwork of cast-in-place wall and the formwork of cast-in-place floor on the basis of the construction of large formwork, so as to support the formwork once, tie the steel bar once, and pour the wall and formwork into shape once at the same time. Because of the extra shape of this formwork is like a rectangular tunnel, it is called tunnel formwork.
Tunnel formwork is a system of formwork that can be used during a normal cycle to cast the walls and formwork of a program. This system produces effective load-bearing structures that are widely used. The tunnel formwork space spans 2.4-2.6 meters, making it easier to subdivide and build smaller spaces.
Tunnel formwork system is used in the production of buildings like housing, jail houses, and student hostels which have monolitic structure. Depending on the size of the structure, tunnel formwork system provides casting of a fl oor in 2 days or in a single day. The buildings which produced by tunnel formwork system are cost efficient, resistant to earthquake, have minimal level of production fl aws and have reduced fi ne-structure labor
costs.
Building | The formwork is specially adapted for each project. The repetitive nature of the system and the use of prefabricated forms and reinforcing mats/cages simplifies the whole construction process, producing a smooth and fast operation. The techniques used are already familiar to the industry, but with tunnel form construction there is less reliance on skilled labour. |
Quality | Quality is enhanced despite the speed of construction. The precise, even steel face of the formwork creates a smooth, high quality finish capable of receiving direct decoration with the minimum of preparation (a skim coat may be required). This reduces the requirement for following trades, thus providing additional cost savings and speeding the entire process. |
Design | The large bays constructed using tunnel form provide exceptional flexibility in the design and layout of the building and allow a high degree of freedom in the final appearance. |
Safety | Tunnel form has integral working platforms and edge protection systems. In addition, the repetitive, predictable nature of the tasks involved encourages familiarity with operations, and, once training is complete, productivity improves as construction progresses. The minimal requirement for tools and equipment when moving the tunnel form further reduces the risk of accidents on site. |
Sustainability | The insitu casting of units on site and the local availability of ready-mixed concrete supplies reduce transportation impacts. Just-in-time deliveries and near zero wastage produce an overall tidier site with associated cost savings and safety benefits. |
